Composite/PVC vs. Cedar Deck Products?
Whether you are planning on a cedar deck or are thinking about using one of the new composite or PVC decking products on the market today, the products we promote and build with are the best in the industry. We feel it is our responsibility as a professional deck building company to know which products are the best on the market and which products are not. We provide our customers with this knowledge and expertise to help them make the very best decision possible. And, if by these statements you're wondering if there are products we WON'T build with...our answer is undeniably "YES, THERE ARE"!
We assist our customers in choosing the products we feel are best suited for them based on the location of their deck, the kind of use their deck will experience and the style of deck they want to build as well as advising them on which products are within their spending target. We strive to provide every customer with the truly custom deck they envision at a price they are comfortable paying.
Many of our customers ask whether we recommend cedar or composite decking. We generally answer that question with a question of our own... "How much time do you want to spend enjoying your deck vs. working at keeping looking nice?" For many homeowners, one of the biggest determining factors for any home improvement project is the cost. At this point in time, composite & PVC decking materials are still more expensive than cedar, but with the rising cost of all lumber, the gap is not as big as it used to be! We truly do not promote cedar over composite or vice versa. We want all of our customers to be happy with their choice of decking... today, tomorrow and well into the future, so we offer a few points for our customers to consider when making their decision:
How much time and/or money do you want to spend to keep your deck looking good every year?
What type of texture and colors are you interested in?
What is the environment of the area where your deck will be? (Shade, full sun, moist, etc.)
What kind of use will your deck be getting? Do you have kids, pets, lots of outdoor dining?
Other factors we feel customers need to evaluate when deciding which material to use are how much stain and scratch resistance they foresee they will need based on the type of traffic their deck will receive. Ultimately, it truly all comes down to what factors are most important to each, individual customer. Again, cost is almost always the biggest consideration, but the knowledge that a cedar deck will require more work (and money!) to maintain year after year than a composite deck is oftentimes the selling point for many customers in their decision. We want to note here that there are NO composite decks that are completely maintenance free. All of the composite and PVC decking materials on the market today do require some cleaning and maintenance each year. This "low" maintenance generally entails a good spring cleaning with an approved cleanser each year and keeping the deck free of organic materials throughout the year. For more information on composite/PVC decking maintenance, check out the "Care & Maintenance" section on any of the composite/PVC decking websites by clicking on the product link for each deck product below.

Given all of the decking choices homeowners have today, sometimes the "tried and true" is still the best choice! Our favorite decking product to work with has been and will remain Western Red Cedar. Just like a new car, the unique aroma alone of a new cedar deck is something no composite will ever be able to duplicate, not to mention the beauty and value that is inherent with cedar deck products. We hand-select only the best cedar lumber for our decks and take great pride in the results we've achieved over the years. If you are in any way reluctant to give one of the new composite or PVC products a try and don't mind the continued maintenance of a cedar deck, then we wholeheartedly recommend choosing Western Red Cedar for your new deck.

Don't let our name fool you, Mike Jansen Custom Cedar Decks builds more than just cedar or wood decks, in fact, most of the decks we build these days are made of composite or PVC based materials. When we started our business 20 years ago, composite decks were in their infancy of development. The first composite decks were introduced in the early 1990's. Those initial composite decking products were good for their time, but nothing like the choices we have today. Composite or PVC based decking products are probably a homeowner's best low maintenance choice here in the Midwest with our wet springs, hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. Wood decks, including cedar, take a beating in our area due to our climate and take some work to maintain every year. Composite and PVC based decking products stand up far better to our sometimes extreme weather changes and most require very little maintence to keep them looking terrific year after year.
Don't get us wrong, we still believe nothing out there can replicate the true "wood" look of cedar or natural hardwoods (a few composite products are getting awful close!), but if you're at all concerned with the havoc our midwest weather wreaks on your deck and the continued maintenance that creates for your deck, we would definitely recommend some of the composite & PVC based products we use. Below you'll find our "Top Picks" for composite & PVC based decking. We choose to build with these brands because we believe they are the best the industry has to offer.
There are numerous composite and PVC based decking products on the market today, but none that we believe will beat the performance, value, low maintenance and warranty terms of the following products. Feel free to ask us about other decking products, but chances are if we're not building with those products, there's a VERY GOOD REASON why we're not!

What our customers have said....
"Without a doubt one of the best contractors I have ever had work for me. Mike not only gave me a quality product but was the only one to tell me that I could extend my deck an extra 2 feet at no additional charge. He and his associate were here at the time they said they would be and finished the job in a timely manner. I would highly recommend them to anyone who is looking to replace a deck."
- R. Milone, Omaha, NE
